Project description
About Sydvästra Stensö
A new residential area is planned in Southwest Stensö, comprising 178 homes. The overarching aim of the project is to enable new housing in a location with strong public transport connections, while establishing a welcoming gateway to Älta.

The area
Älta is surrounded by scenic nature, lakes, and a large nature reserve. The area features a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and apartment buildings from the 1960s and 70s, along with schools, preschools, recreational facilities, and untouched natural landscapes near the town center. Since the development of Älta Centrum and nearby housing in the 1960s, the district has been shaped by a vibrant cultural and community life. Älta Centrum has an adopted planning program and a detailed development plan for the central blocks, including 950 new apartments. The urban development project for Southwest Stensö forms part of this broader planning initiative.

Social and ecological sustainability
The new residential block is designed to encourage interaction among residents and seamlessly connect the area’s diverse spaces and activities through natural movement between the buildings. The courtyard will feature an inviting public square that welcomes people into the block, along with open green spaces, a playground, and an outdoor gym. Social and ecological sustainability have been central principles in the winning proposal. Circular flows are enabled and promoted through initiatives such as a sharing economy, on-site urban gardening, and a communal bicycle workshop accessible to all residents.
